Exclamation How to Build a Successful Pedal Effects Company Without Designing Or Building Anything

This whole Vertex Effects thing shows that the easiest way to dupe a musician is by charging a lot of money for a piece of gear and telling him it is the best piece of gear in the world.

If it is expensive -- it must be good.

Folks have joked online for years that if you put a fancy label on a $30 pedal and marketing it as a one of a kind "Magic dust" pedal for $300 folks would line up for miles to buy it. It appears that companies like Vertex Effects, Freekish Blues (Alpha Drive) took this literally.

So If you want to start a "boutique" effects pedal company and do not have an original design or product, all you have to do is follow these easy 10 steps to fame and riches

    1. Find a product you can easily re-house/paint
    2. Design a fancy logo
    3. Get plenty of goop
    4. Get a couple of top musicians to demo the product
    5. Get a friend to post "Hey did you hear about XXXX" on a couple of "friendly" forums
    6. Get a couple of friends to respond to the post with " Yes I have and it is the best xxxx I have ever tried"
    7. Then you come in and thank everyone (actually your buddies) for the kind words
    8. Post a couple of video demos.
    9. Create a wait list
    10. Mark it up 5 to 10x base cost and wait for the cash to roll in.

The sad thing is most folks have no idea what good tone is and rely on marketing hype, often reinforced by mods of complicit forums who wittingly (or unwittingly) are trying to promote their new "favorite son's business.

Musicians want to be told something is good and are willing to pay you for it. They all want to join an exclusive club ... and again .. they are willing to pay top $$ and wait for membership.

Great business model.... that is until you get caught.

Mason's fraud has done great damage to the boutique industry. He and Tim Gregoire (Faustine) are criminals plain and simple. They should be in jail for the frauds they have perpetrated. I only hope that Ford, Landau, Thompson and others that have endorsed him find out and leave him high and dry. He makes them look like fools.

You see the Neutrik/Belden cable pictures Laz? Freaking crook.

They followed a proven play book.

Need to post some pictures of the cables as well.

imho the percentage of fancy priced pedals I've tried which are better then Boss or the like are very small.

Klon, Quinn, Fuchs, Maxon, and a few others come to mind as being worth the money.

otoh there are tons of awesome off brand usa and japan made pedals out there for well under $100

Well, here are my thoughts having bought 2 Vertex wahs, 2 cables, a volume pedal, the boost and the chorus.

I definitely feel that Mason has abused my friendship and trust. No doubt in my mind. I've even met Mason.

I still gig with the NOS Wah, the boost (love it), the chorus and the cables. I like the volume pedal too, but I never use volume pedals.

I have had a bunch of wahs and the NOS really sounds good with my rig. I like the cables too, and I own Van Den Hul and a bunch of the big names. I love the chorus and still own a stock Arion and the EWS modded Arion. The Vertex is the one still on my board. The boost is great with my rig, doesn't add that shrill high end other boosts add.

I gigged this weekend and loved all my tones.

That being said, although I'm happy, I have given Mason more money than those were worth and he has lost my trust.

I'm still going to use those pedals as I'm actually happy with them and haven't even thought about buying replacements. Maybe I'm hearing things that don't exist, but I do like my rig.

I will probably never buy another Vertex pedals. However, I would have never tried a stock BBE wah, which shows me that I need to not discount "cheaper" pedals in the future.

Hope this all makes sense from a former Vertex fan boy.

    Hey brother.

    Thanks for chiming in.

It sucks when someone violates your trust and support in such a way. That happened to me years ago with a guitar dealer. I actually sued him and got a lien on his house. Needless to say the dispute was settled when he realized the noose was tightening around his neck.

I am sure the wah sounds great and so do the cables. From what I am reading is that they are Neutrik/Belden cables. I have heard great things about the Belden cables but never tried one.

If any good comes of this is that folks will spend some money on the BBE wahs and look into Belden cables.

You forgot the last step, give some mods at those friendly forums a couple freebies.

I think this is potentially covered under step 5

#4 - There were more than a couple of player endorsements. Check out Vertex endorsement list, Carlton and Ford, Maybe my 2 fav's , then Scott Henderson, one of the best. Then there is Lukather, Landau, and Thorn. I was not even thinking this was a hoax. That was the best thing Mason did was to have all those great players endorsing his products. Once I saw this group of heavies I was sold...Live and learn I guess. I will no longer give a rats ass what any of these guys play through, I don't trust any of them when it comes to gear. They are getting paid and they are salesmen at this point.

Something I actually picked up from Tag some years back, was to listen with my ears and NOT my eyes, I always try to remember that, But this time I saw my heros and I started listing with my eyes again Will I ever learn?

Well Mason at Vertex Effects pissed off Joe Bonamassa. Apparently Mason at Vertex Effects was promoting that he built a fly board for Joe Bonamassa -- according to Joe that is not true -- and he posted so on his forum.

Somebody has a new VERTEX board... (Page 1) ? Joe's Guitars, Amps and Gear ? Joe Bonamassa Forum

    Not cool at all.

Here is a screen shot of the post by Joe Bonamassa on the pedalboard Mason at Vertex Effects "allegedly" built for him.
