Electro Harmonix Soul Food - Best Klon clone ever?

I just ordered one of these -- should get it tomorrow. All the clips I heard indicate to me that the Electro Harmonix Soul Food is a straight up Klon clone.

for only $68 I figured I would give it a shot

    Soul Food Overdrive
Tone aficionados kept telling EHX's Mike Matthews about a pedal that had achieved a lot of buzz because it was only obtainable at an exorbitant price. That pedal was the KLON CENTAUR. A believer in bringing great tools to starving musicians, Mike tasked his trusty team to create an affordable alternative, and that is how the SOUL FOOD was cooked up.

The SOUL FOOD delivers transparent overdrive with great touch and response. Its circuitry features boosted power rails to provide abundant headroom and increased definition. Best of all, you don't have to be a rock star to own one!

Electro Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Features:
    Transparent overdrive
Boosted power rails for extended headroom and definition
    Super responsive
    Compact, rugged design
Selectable true bypass or buffered bypass modes
9.6DC-200 power supply included. Also runs on 9 Volt battery

    got it.

all I can say is that this was the best 68 dollars I ever spent on a piece of gear.

If this pedal was selling for $300 there would be an 18 month waiting list for it.

Re: Electro Harmonix Soul Food - Best Klon clone ever?

We went up to the Boston Marathon this weekend, so I was lucky enough to be the only person in the Fenway Guitar Center this morning. According to the girl working in the pedal department these are backordered with no date in sight after the stock they have is depleted.
I bought two of the three they had.

A friend of mine told me there is some litigation going on with these due to the EH website. Not sure if this is true or not.

At any rate, I have briefly (very briefly) tried them side by side.

The original sounds better in the midrange. It's slightly less present (or harsh). Is it $2000 different? No way. Is it better then any of the Klon Klones I have played? Yes, in the fact that it actually is close to the Klon and not just something in a box with a horsie on it.

I like the size, and having the buffer in there ala KTR is cool, too. Build quality obviously goes to the original, as the pots on the SF feel cheap to me - although it's $63 (with an included AC adaptor btw).

At the end of the day, if both my Klons and my KTR were stolen I would pay the $2000 for another - but only because I have used one for so long and I'm an idiot like that.

This is a serious pedal that will put you square in Klon territory for a Behringer price point. I would advise you to buy more then one. My guess is someone will figure out what to swap to calm the mids.

I think it is the best Clone of a Klon I have tried to date. The fact that it costs around 50-75% less than the average clone ... buying one (or two) is a no brainer.

I can see why there might be some issues ..

    From the EH website:

Re: Electro Harmonix Soul Food - Best Klon clone ever?

    Yeah, exactly.

Like I said, given the choice between a Klon and the Soul Food I would take the Klon every time. Given the choice between a Soul Food or Aluminum Falcon, etc... I would go with the Soul Food because it's at least as close (I feel closer) then any other klone out there.

Also, I should say that it's amazing that for $63 it comes with a Boss style AC adaptor.

Re: Electro Harmonix Soul Food - Best Klon clone ever?

It goes to show you, a professional engineering team can in one swoop destroy all the cloners.

It won't be long before someone figures out what chip to change (for mids) and offers a $50 upgrade to install better jacks/switches etc.

I am sure Keeley and Analogman are already working on it!

So here we have a major company cloning an actively produced and marketed product and in a sense legitimizing product cloning.

The question I have is this even legal?

They can go and remove Klon from their website -- but IMO the damage is already done.

Re: Electro Harmonix Soul Food - Best Klon clone ever?

I agree 100%. My guess is that if we swap the Chinese components out for higher quality Japanese or American parts it would resolve this. I may order some. If I do, I'll order extras because it's probably 20 cents worth of parts and let you know. If there is a difference I'll send some up to you!

Between you two guys and the crazy low price even I'm going to GC this weekend to pick one up. I have never actually seen, much less played a Klon but that EH pedal sounds nice. Kudos to the guy that played those clips!
