seriously - best $68 you will ever spend on a pedal.

IMO EH killed the Klon clone market.

I had one and a KTR, It is a great pedal for 60 bucks, thats for sure. It did not sound as
good as the KTR to me, whether it was alone or boosting. Not by a huge margin however.
I am finding that I don't really need a Klon or KTR or soulfood as I like my OD's better. It is a
    great booster though,....

Well, I jumped on the bandwagon.

I bought 4 (yes!) Soul Foods a couple weeks ago. Three were intended as gifts (I have 3 good friends with birthdays in June).

Love the pedal. As was noted, it's not *quite* the same as my Klon but close enough. One of my buds who is VERY VERY picky about OD pedals (he has dog ears and is quite an amazing guitar player) just LOVED it.

So, I liked it enough that I went and ordered another with the JHS mod. Electro Harmonix Soul Food "Meat & 3" Mod

I'm betting that mod will get the S.F. so close that I couldn't do a blindfold test between it and my Klon and tell the diff.

Plus now I can take the pedal gigging and not have to worry about someone sticky-fingering a $2K pedal.
Born on third - thinks he hit a triple.

Honestly I think "close enough" works in this case especially at the $68 price point.

However, "close enough" does not work for me in the $150 plus price range that the typical Klon clone sells for.

I think the SF sounds better and closer than the number of Klon clones I have owned over the years and for $68 -- no contest. SF is the Klon clone killer.

Once the drummer and bass player kick in I defy anyone to tell the difference. Like you said, $68 is a no brainer.

I was told that they will be raising the price soon. Not much, something like $75 IIRC.

My worry about the mod is that the "meat" pot will squeeze out the battery option. My one complaint about the Soul Food was that the battery barely fit. I'm a battery guy, I change pedals like socks. I have a pedal board but that's only for the few pedals I have that won't take batteries (Strymon etc..).

Re: Electro Harmonix Soul Food - Best Klon clone ever?

Once you up the volume to gig levels -- the SF starts to fall apart next to the real Klon.

Klon was not meant to be played at bedroom levels (IMO).

Something about that pedal (KLON) at gig volumes -- the louder you play it -- the better your amp sounds.

At low levels it is easy to get similar tones.

However, the SF (IMO) is without a doubt Klone killer.

I think the Soul Food is a GREAT pedal. I was skeptical because of the low price. I mean, how could it be good? WRONG. It's really a great addition to my tone palette. Plays nice with other OD pedals too. I think I will send it to JHS for the upgrade. The clips I've heard indicate a richer tone you can simply roll in, or roll off for the original.

I am fortunate enough to own a real Klon -- and I have gone through a number of fairly high priced Klon clones. My advice to folks that have not been able to snag a real Klon from one of the current runs -- is to get a SF. Do not drop the coin on an expensive clone unless you are looking for a jerk off session with the local shills and kook-aid drinkers that frequent those other gear page forums ...

Re: Electro Harmonix Soul Food - Best Klon clone ever?

I would get the Rockett Archer over the Soul Food. They are 152.15 with a 15% discount from Pro Guitar Shop.
I sampled it next to a KTR and a Silver Klon and it sounded very good. I still preferred the Orig Klon and KTR by
a very small margin, but the Archer is very nice and a solid small sized box.
