Re: Axe-Fx Gig Diary - Playing Out with the Fractal Audio Axe-FX Mark 2

Got to play a little bit tonight with the Q12 on the speaker pole. Overall a much better experience. Now I can hear better -- before I was just blasting away at my ass.

I really like the sound projection better with the Q12 speaker on a PA Pole stand. It seems to fill out the room more.

also the speaker in the Q12 is nicely broken in (God knows how many hours I have put on her already)

I am telling the rig is sounding golden!

Now all I need is FW10 and a freaking controller and we will go from gold to double platinum.

Re: Axe-Fx Gig Diary - Playing Out with the Fractal Audio Axe-FX Mark 2

This weekend will be my first gig using FW10

It is amazing -- everything sound incredibly tube like.

Also my 60's vintage Fender Twin is in FW10

So my clean patch will be my Fender Twin (literally) and my OD channel will be Dumble Serial # 213 which also sounds insane!

should be a good gig -- except for the fact that I still do not have a foot controller

Re: Axe-Fx Gig Diary - Playing Out with the Fractal Audio Axe-FX Mark 2

    Gig #7
    Friday 4/12/13
    The Wearhouse Grill
    Lake Hopatcong, NJ

    Gear
    Axe-Fx 2
    Matrix GT1000FX
    MATRIX Q12 PASSIVE CAB
    suhr Korina Tele with Humbuckers
    FW10

All I can say is wow.......

the combination of the Matrix GT1000FX with the Q12 and FW10 is a match made in heaven. I had to do zero tweaking. Nothing. No adjustments to global or any EQ -- it just sounded perfect. I played three amps throughout the night

    1. Twin Reverb - played it for most songs - on some with compressor or -- a couple with the tube screamer. I really liked the tube screamer twin combination -- I had it set to a very low gain and it killed on tunes that I wanted more presence and a little grit when I dug in (i.e. "Baby I love you" by Aretha Franklin

    2. Dumble -- this amp just absolutely blew me away. I set it for a low gain Larry Carlton tone and used it to play "Sleepwalk". My drummer looked over and asked what the hell got into me. My playing was completely off the charts tonight. The combination of FW10 with the Matrix GT1000 and Q12 was inspiring. I actually got a standing ovation from the patrons of the club and the club owners. The amp rules!

    3. Friedman BE -- again set to a low gain setting -- it just was inspiring. Played it on a couple of tracks including "Fooled Around and fell in love". You pull back the gain on some of the amps and they sound incredible.

the Twin ruled for most of the night -- it just sounded great.

Man what a night. I am telling you there is something about the Matrix products and the Axe -- it is like they are made for each other and designed to be played live like an amp.

I had a big smile on face all night long -- I knew I sounded good.

I was confident in my playing and the crowd knew I was on .... just freaking awesome!

Putting the Q12 on a pole was one of the best things I did --- I can actually hear myself and feel the ramp espond to my playing more clearly.

    Gig #8
    Sat 4/13/13
    Shenanigan's Pub
    Rockaway, NJ

Another fabulous night with the Axe. The room was a bit more challenging (smaller and with carpets). However we did such a good job that the club owner gave us a bonus! First time that has ever happened to me (outside of wedding dates) and a couple of patrons gave us tips -- both in one night!

So we got a bonus plus tips from the patrons .......

I think I will call this the Axe Effect!

    Same amps had duties tonight
    Twin sounded great
    Dumble sounded great

Friedman BE -- not so much. It was a bit too unruly for the room.

I need to create a preset for Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell In Love". Does anybody know the gear he used on that track? I love the tone of the guitar solo.

Couple of pictures of the room and set-up

    Gig #9
    Sat 4/28/13
    Dublin Pub
    Morristown, NJ

rocked the house! Mucho compliments on my tone and playing. Pretty exciting to have a group of people standing around just checking me out soloing on the guitar.

This was the best (tone wise) gig to date with the Axe. I am really beginning to understand how to dial in the Axe-FX 2.

    On the menu tonight

Fender Twin (the work horse for the night)
Marshall Plexi Patch (My Elvin Bishop patch -- which I have tweaked some more)
    Dumble ODS

    SuperTweed

The Matrix GT1000 and the Q12 sounded incredible -- the combination of the patches being dialed in along with the Matrix stuff made for an inspirational night!

After 9 gigs with the Axe-FX, I finally do a gig with the MFC controller!!!

what a difference it made. It was a little clumsy at first (I need smaller feet) but it was a vast overall improvement. I need to think through "scenes" a little better. Using Scenes with the MFC is going to be a life saver for gigging Axe owners with big feet!

and as usual the MTARIX GT1000FX AND Q12 rocked the house!

Re: Axe-Fx Gig Diary - Playing Out with the Fractal Audio Axe-FX Mark 2

    Gig #11
    Fri 5/17/13
    St. Moritz
    Lake Mohawk, NJ

    Gear
    Axe-Fx 2
    Matrix GT1000FX
    MATRIX Q12 PASSIVE CAB
James Tyler Burning Water 2k (SSH configuration)
    FW10
    MFC
    Afam Front Panel

Got some of the kinks out of scene/preset layouts. Scenes no question is the way to go.

I have 5 basic presets of which last night I basically used 3

    Twin Reverb
    65 Bassman
    Dumble ODS lead channel

The Twin and the bassman have the identical scenes setup

    1. basic preset - amp/reverb
    2. Compressor/Light chorus/reverb
    3. Slight Edge clean with a tube screamer/reverb
    4. Crunch (BB- Pre)/reverb
    5. Solo - BB-Pre/Boost/reverb/delay

    Dumble I has set up

    1. Basic preset with delay/reverb
    2. More saturation - Tube screamer/Reverb/Delay
    3. Solo Basic preset - boost/delay/reverb

Depending on the tune I go between the Twin Reverb and the Bassman for rhythm. On a couple of tunes I use effects like Mutron, tremolo, phaser etc and I turn those on manually (like a stomp box).

It works -- saves a lot of pedal dancing and things flow very smoothly. Over the next few weeks I want to setup an expression pedal for clean/od morphing. I am not crazy about the wah sim in the AXE so I might have to add my Area 51 wah to a board (when I get around to putting one together -- however I am getting by with using the mutron (Yek's settings) -- it sounds great and doing the job nicely.
