Fractal Audio XL+ In the House

I was in the market for another amp -- and given the fact that we are starting to do larger shows and the band is thinking of going 100% through PA -- I decided to buy the new Fractal Axe-FX XL+.

I have used the AXE-FX on and off for the last few years and gigged extensively with the AF2 for over a year using a Matrix power amp and NL112 speaker - sounded great but decided to give it a rest for a while and go back to tubes.

This time around I am not going to be using power amps of any kind and just using a good monitor and going through PA.

I picked up a couple of QSC K10 powered monitors (needed them for the band any way) -- and I have to tell you -- the AXE with the latest firmware (19) sounds incredible (even to a tube snob like me).

I selected the QSC K10s for a couple of reasons

    1. The sound fantastic
    2. I will be able to mix both a direct line from the Axe-FX with the feed from the PA -- so if I need to hear more guitar in my monitor I can raise it without killing everybody else -- really nice feature.

The QSC K10s sound terrific -- easy to dial a patch in. Other Powered monitors I used in the past with the Axe-Fx I had issues dialing in a patch (too boomy or they just did not sound or feel right) -- The QSC K10 monitors are a piece of cake to dial in just using the basic EQs of the amp models (no additional tweaking needed).

    Highly recommend them.

$12 TV stand from Walmart cleaned up my Fractal AF2 XL+ corner very well

    QSC K10 fits nicely below.

Re: Fractal Audio XL+ In the House

I walked away from the Axe-fx for a while -- but I have to say the firmware updates on this thing plus the high rez IRs that are available make this thing really sound amazing.

I got back into the game game because we are playing larger events where it makes sense to wire up the entire band. The XL+ in combination with the latest firmware and the quality hi rez IRs that are available is just blowing my mind.

I am just using a nice powered monitor (QSC K10) and it sounds and amazing (especially with the vintage fender amps) it is all there. The patches made on the QSC K10 sound amazing through the PA.

We are thinking of adding Kid Charlemagne to the setlist. I pulled up a Deluxe Tweed up and a Hi Rez tweed cab and in a couple of minutes had the tone pretty close to the record.

The amp responds to My 336 like the real deal.

    Pretty happy so far.

Probably will not take out the new rig until Oct or Nov -- we are upgrading our PA (going to get the QSC Quicktouch Mixer) -- once we have a couple of full rehearsals with the new PA and have a couple of "band" presets stored in the QSC mixer - then I will take out the Axe rig.

    Hi Laz
When you where using the NL12 did you prefer to leave the cab modeling on or off? Is the QSC K10 FRFR?
    Thanks Gary

With the NL12s I did not use cab blocks at all.

NL12s are great with the Matrix -- however, these days I am doing larger gigs and it makes more sense to go through PA.

The QSC K10 are great monitors/speakers and yes they are FRFR. it has a setting for Flat response. They sound really great matched with the XL+.

I also just upgrade my PA system.

    Using:

    2 QSC K12 Mains
    2 QSC K10 monitors
4 Mackie 12 inch "Thumpers" monitors

and the QSC TouchMix 16 board.

Patches sound great through the monitors and mains -- zero adjustments needed.

PS -- this is my stage next week

going to be playing on this Yacht

    Hi Laz
Thanks, I have found I also like the Cab block off. I just wonder at times when I try Fender style amps I'm maybe missing the correct speaker influence by not using FRFR, but other wise all good.

pretty cool ship. You gonna (probably happened) cruising the Hudson, Delaware?

    Hudson Cruise

IMO the NL12 and Matrix combo sounds best with cabs off.

Low volume playing at home I experimented with cabs on and it sounded OK but it was not the same.

I really liked the NL12/Matrix combination -- however, now I am just going through PA and using a QSC K10 to monitor myself and it sounds really amazing.

I just need to learn to live with listening to my guitar through stage monitors vs a cab. In these types of venues I would have to mike the amp cab anyway -- and have to turn the amp way down and let the PA do the work -- so in the end -- With a real amp and cab I would not be able to push any air only baby farts --
