    Herniated Disc

    Well it happened.

Last friday I could not complete my 3rd set.

Before I started playing I had a sharp pain in my back and it got worse ... when I tell it was the worse pain I ever experienced I am not exagerrating one bit.

My legs started going numb. When I got home, I was barely able to get upstairs to my bedroom.
The morning comes - and I cannot move (pain was completely off the scale) - and again my legs (first my right leg, then my left leg) got numb (dead asleep numb).

Went to the ER where they did a CATScan -- and sure enough I have a herniated disc.

Been on my back the last few days taking all kinds of pain killers and muscle relaxers. I feel a little better today --- but man I have to tell you ... I have never experienced pain like this in my entire life

    feeling better.

Off the oxy and moving around.

Man I have to say the pain from a herniated disc has to be the most excruciating pain I have ever felt in my life.

A friend of mine is a spine surgeon and he said to me now you know what real pain feels like. He says he has patients that live with this type of pain everyday.

I just cannot imagine living with this type of pain on a daily basis.

He was right -- I had no idea what real pain was until now. a herniated disc makes passing a kidney stone feel like a walk in the park (and I have had several stones).

    Just off the charts....

Hope that back is feeling better. I found out I have DDD and have a bulging disc since and injury 5 years ago. If you have not learned about the strtching exersizes, look it up and do them every day before getting out of bed. Does help considerably.

What an odd coincidence. I've been laid up for thre days now due to lower back pain. Woke up yesterday at 4:30 am and it was o bad my wife drove me to the emergency room. Nver experienced anything like it, mostly my right leg but it was nubm yet not nmb, throbbing yet not throbbing, and no postion, sitting standing, lyingon one side ro another, standing on my head, nothing ouwld alleviate it. SOrt of comingout of it but far frim in the clear. LAst night the meds they gave me weren't doing anything, percoset, valium, neither. I might as well beeen stone cold sober..... would wish this sort of pain on my worse enemy....

    Re: Herniated Disc

the pain is off the charts

Once the swelling goes down it starts to feel better but it never goes away.

The leg(s) going numb is a sure sign of some sort of disc trauma -- basically something pushing up against a nerve in your spine that is causing the leg to go numb.

Right now -- I don't have the pain that I had that weekend -- not even close. But I have discomfort everyday ----

    what has helped me is

    1. Get a pillow wedge (to raise your legs - it relieves the pressure on your lower back)
    2. get a heat pad
    3. get a reusable ice pack (that you can freeze)

I have to lie down 2-3 times a day and alternate heat and cold on my back. sitting in my office -- I put the ice pack on my lower back several times a day... and that helps a lot.

I had to drive to Boston two weeks ago for the day (from NJ) and return the same day (brutal) -- what I did was buy several packages of instant ice packs (the ones you crush and shake) and used them on the trip.

Once your lower back goes -- your are done -- it only gets worse as time goes on -- it is progressively degenerative so you need to learn how to live with it and do things to minimize the swelling and strengthen the muscles in your lower back to give yourself some extra support.

But you need to face the facts that your back is forever toast and learn to live with it.
