Gary Johnson Of Glaswerks Amps Is A Genius!

Inspired by the Dumble bright cap thread, I thought I'd mess with my SOD II bright caps this AM and it ended up leading me on a two hour journey of rediscovery through this absolute masterpiece all over again! Gary is truly a genuis. There are so many ways to sculpt your tone on this thing and so many amazing tones available, I was blown away all over again today by this thing! This is TRULY a desert island amp!

So, I popped in the pull-pot thus defeating the master bright caps and also defeated the clean channel bright cap and then set about reconfiguring the entire amp from head to toe. I ended up with the following settings, which I am really psyched about as another fantastic alternative to my regular settings!

One feature on this amp which is totally unique in the Dumble style world (and is not talked about much) is the Treble and Bass pots on the non-HRM channel (top row middle) which allow you to tweak the clean channel any way like and then tweak the top and bottom on your non-HRM OD channel to compensate w/o turning the channel into an HRM channel (so I believe these adjustments are still pre tonestack). I had forgotten how incredibly effective this feature is! W/o the B-cap on the clean channel, I had to boost Treble on it which made the OD channel too bright for my bridge PUP, so I knocked it back with the non-HRM OD Treble adjust. Friggin' brilliant! You can get an absolutely perfect balance (for anyone's taste) between channels with this thing!

I also got into messing with the low end because w/o the B-caps, that had changed too. That's where the Fat switch and non-HRM Bass controls came in. Man, I probably went through a dozen combinations and settled on those above. The Fat switch is in the setting that's one step "leaner" than the RF Dumble but the non-HRM Bass click pot is in the RF setting...a hybrid arrangement which gets me the perfect balance of clarity and chunk on the lows without sacrificing any of the fatness in the mids and highs!

Finally, the HRM channel had to be tweaked quite a bit for my lowish gain SC tones, with Treble going a good amount and the Bass a touch.

Throw the boost switches and interstage gain pots on the back into the mix and the sky's the limit, but I left those in my "stock" settings for now, although the Mid Boost has peaked my interest once again! Kudos to Gary for creating an amp that can truly be just about anything to any body seeking the best of the best Dumble tones and far beyond!

So you have a switch that gives you the option of putting in or taking the bright cap out of the circuit.

I have the RF voicing but, as you know, with the standard switches and controls, you can cover a lot more ground that just that! How 'bout you? Just having so much available on the outside of the box is such a nice. It's going on two years for me and I'm still discoverting and re-discovering great sounds!

Oh ya! There's a pull-pot which bypasses the caps on both OD channel masters and there's a 3-way on the clean channel (which ONLY affects the clean channel) to give you no bright cap, a little bright or a little more bright. There are also the three EQ switches affecting the voicing of the Bass, Mids and Treble on the clean channel (which feeds the OD channels), so you can go from 70s voicings through 90s and "custom" voicings by flipping switches. You can also hard bypass the Dumbleator, do fast/slow response, high power/low power, OD1/OD2 Trims adjust, bias jacks/pots, mid boost, tonestack bypass boost, etc, so you kinda' get a shopping list of features that let you do things that formerly required opening up the box and getting out the iron...and still do for most D-styles.

SWEET! I have often contemplated the 2x12 cab and even another SOD II in a 183 voicing, or something else totally different than what I have, but keep telling myself I have too much stuff as it is!

    Amps look great guys!
Yes, great tone either way and I can't really pick a favorite. It's really just two good flavors. I do have to admit that I didn't really give the bypassed OD Master bright cap experience enough tweak time in the past. Plus, I tried it last time with a WGS Blackhawk HP and G12-65 type , which are both on the darker side. Those speaks can sound great with bypased caps but I really like the way the EVM-loaded GW Thiele sounds with it.
